The Vancouver Special is UBC’s first student-led urban planning journal, published by CAPACity (Creative And Passionate About Cities). Taking its name from Vancouver’s iconic vernacular housing typology, the journal was established to democratize planning discourse, including submissions from students and faculty across the department. The first publication intends to spotlight undergraduate scholarship related to this year’s theme, “Urban Belonging”. It includes student work on regional transit, housing accessibility, spatial politics, sustainability, and more. The journal invites students to analyze systems across Metro Vancouver, and the broader urban world, through different ways of knowledge production.
